PPP Shortlists Eight Candidates for Presidential Primary

Seoul: The People Power Party (PPP) announced on Wednesday that it has selected eight candidates to move forward to the first round of its primary, aiming to choose a nominee for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for June 3.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the eight individuals advancing to this stage include former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo, former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon, former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, PPP lawmakers Na Kyung-won and Ahn Cheol-soo, Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok, North Gyeongsang Governor Lee Cheol-woo, and former lawmaker Yang Hyang-ja. These candidates were chosen from a pool of 11 registered applicants.

The PPP plans to conduct a public survey to further narrow down the list to four candidates by April 22. Following this, a second round of the primary is scheduled for April 29, where two finalists will be selected. This decision will be based on a combination of party member votes and public polling, each accounting for 50 percent of the outcome. The final nominee for the presidential election will be confirmed on May 3.

South Korea's presidential election comes in the wake of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's removal from office due to his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law.
