Seoul: Lawmakers of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Friday submitted a resolution urging the Lee Jae Myung administration to drop its push to integrate the nation's military academies into a single institution.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the resolution was signed by 32 PPP lawmakers along with two other lawmakers. It called on President Lee to retract his controversial remarks suggesting that graduates of the Korea Military Academy had been involved in all of the country's past military coups. The resolution further urged the government to halt its initiative to establish an integrated military academy by combining the academies of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, labeling the move as "politically motivated."

The initiative to integrate the academies faced opposition not only from the PPP but also received backing from independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon, a former leader of the PPP, and Rep. Chun Ha-ram, the floor leader of the minor opposition Reform Party. This diverse political backing highlights the contentious nature of the proposed integration.

The resolution was filed following a policy briefing by the defense ministry on Wednesday, during which President Lee warned of the potential risk of another coup by Army elites and advocated for the swift integration of the military academies to mitigate such risks.
