Police Raid POSCO E&C Following Fatal Subway Tunnel Collapse

Gwangmyeong: Police and labor authorities have conducted a raid on POSCO E and C and its subcontractors in connection with the recent collapse of a subway construction site near Seoul that resulted in the death of one worker and injury to another.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the tunnel, which was being constructed by POSCO E and C for the Shinansan Line, collapsed in Gwangmyeong on April 11. The Shinansan Line is a new metropolitan rail line connecting Ansan in Gyeonggi Province with Seoul's Yeouido. Two workers were trapped in the incident; one was rescued after 13 hours, while the other was found dead on April 16.

The raid involved approximately 60 investigators from the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, along with around 90 officials from the labor ministry's Seongnam branch office. They searched nine locations across seven companies, including POSCO E and C's head and field offices, its subcontractors, and supervisors, in search of possible evidence related to the collapse.

Police and labor officials plan to use the documents and evidence seized in the raid to thoroughly investigate the cause of the tunnel collapse and determine if safety regulations were adhered to at the construction site. So far, police have charged three officials-each from POSCO E and C, one subcontractor, and one supervision company-with occupational negligence resulting in death.
