Seoul: The People Power Party (PPP) is under intense scrutiny as it gears up for its leadership election scheduled for August 22. Concerns are mounting that the party is veering away from public sentiment and the much-needed renewal, highlighted by the emergence of figures from the anti-impeachment camp such as former Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo and lawmaker Jang Dong-hyuk as strong candidates for the party chair.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the lineup of candidates for the party's Supreme Council has sparked further criticism. Among them is lawyer Kim So-yeon, who once lauded former President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law as a "patriotic decision." Ryu Yeo-hae, a former Supreme Council member of the Liberty Korea Party, was expelled due to repeated controversial remarks and clashes with party leadership.

Kim Tae-woo, previously the head of Gangseo District, experienced a significant defeat in the October 2023 by-election, which he ran under Yoon's endorsement. This loss is seen as a pivotal moment in the party's decline. Former lawmaker Kim Jae-won received a one-year suspension for minimizing the April 3 Jeju Massacre, while former spokesperson Kim Min-soo resigned after making contentious comments on YouTube.

The rise of these figures is viewed by critics as a step backward for the party. Adding to the controversy, Myung Tae-gyun, implicated in an investigation into alleged primary interference by Yoon and his wife, reportedly expressed support for Kim So-yeon and Ryu Yeo-hae.

The PPP remains heavily influenced by Yoon. Jang Dong-hyuk, during a conversation with conservative YouTubers, mentioned plans to visit the former president if he becomes the party chair. This situation unfolds as the ruling Democratic Party threatens to pursue the dissolution of the PPP over its connections to the former president's insurrection charges, leaving many questioning the party's objectives in maintaining these ties.

With the PPP's approval ratings plummeting to the low teens and key pro-Yoon figures under investigation, the party appears to be diverging further from mainstream public sentiment. Analysts caution that without a clear strategy for recovery, the party's current path signals an ongoing political decline.
