Suwon: Prosecutors have charged opposition leader Lee Jae-myung with embezzling 106.53 million won (US$76,600) from the Gyeonggi provincial government. The charges stem from allegations of misuse of corporate cards and an official car during his time as governor. According to Yonhap News Agency, the Suwon District Prosecutors Office filed the indictment against Lee, alongside his former chief of staff, identified by the surname Jeong, and a former provincial government employee, Bae. The charges, which include occupational embezzlement, have been brought without physically detaining the accused. Lee, who leads the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), allegedly used a government-owned Genesis G80 car for personal purposes between July 2018 and October 2021 while he was the governor of Gyeonggi Province. This period of alleged misuse coincides with his tenure in office, raising significant concerns about the ethical use of public resources.
