Pyongyang:North Korea has conducted a test of a "dispersal warhead" for a strategic cruise missile, as reported by state media on Tuesday. This follows its recent test of a cluster bomb for ballistic missiles, showcasing the nation's continued focus on advancing its missile technology.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the tests were carried out by the Missile Administration on Monday to evaluate the warhead's power and the missile's "vertical strike" capability, as detailed by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The Warhead Institute of the Missile Administration confirmed that the dispersal warhead could devastate a target area of 5 to 6 hectares with its concentrated power.
The Cruise Missile System Institute reported enhancements in the missile's vertical strike ability, which have improved its terminal maneuverability. This adjustment considers the natural and geographical characteristics of the targeted area. The director of the missile administration emphasized the urgent need to develop a variety of weapon systems to defend the nation's security and deter threats, highlighting the tests as a demonstration of North Korea's "practical combat power."
North Korea has expressed intentions to deploy various types of cluster warheads by the end of the year and recently tested a cluster bomb suitable for tactical ballistic missiles. Experts suggest that North Korea aims to develop capabilities for precise strikes on South Korean forces' underground facilities and tunnel entryways.
In response, the South Korean military has stated its readiness to counter any provocations from the North. Capt. Jang Do-young, spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, assured that South Korea has developed precision strike capabilities and relevant weapons systems, maintaining a permanent state of operational readiness.
