Seoul: Kim Jong-cheol, the inaugural chair of the Korea Media Communications Commission (KMCC), has vowed to enforce strict measures against fake news and digital sex crimes. In his inaugural address, Kim emphasized his commitment to addressing false and manipulated information, as well as malicious comments that disrupt the public sphere of democracy. He also promised a stern response to digital sexual exploitation materials.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim has been appointed as the head of the newly established state media watchdog, which replaces the Korea Communications Commission and assumes some responsibilities previously held by the Ministry of Science and ICT. These responsibilities include oversight of new media and subscription-based services. Kim stated that the KMCC would act as a "promoter of a fair media order," highlighting that restoring constitutional principles would foster an environment conducive to freedom of speech.

Kim acknowledged the dual nature of technological advancement, noting that while it offers convenience, it also presents challenges such as the polarization of public opinions and the spread of false information. He pointed out the issue of unfair treatment for both global and domestic platforms. Kim indicated that the KMCC would undertake bold reforms of outdated regulatory frameworks and promote the local industry to position Korea as a global media powerhouse.

On the topic of introducing a ban on teenagers' use of social media platforms, Kim said he would weigh both the positive and negative aspects of the issue. Earlier in the week, he expressed the necessity of implementing such measures to protect underage users from harmful online content.

Kim has held significant roles in various government judiciary bodies, including the Presidential Special Committee on National Constitution Advisory, during former President Moon Jae-in's administration.
