National Assembly Approves Bill for Renaming Parliamentary Committees Amid Opposition

Seoul: The National Assembly on Sunday passed a bill to rename standing parliamentary committees in sync with the recent government reorganization, despite resistance from the main opposition.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the revision to the National Assembly Act, pushed by the ruling Democratic Party (DP), passed with all 180 lawmakers present out of the parliament's 300 members voting in favor, during a plenary session boycotted by the main opposition People Power Party (PPP).

Under the legislation, three standing committees will be renamed, with the Strategy and Finance Committee becoming the Finance and Economic Planning Committee, and the Environment and Labor Committee becoming the Climate, Energy, Environment and Labor Committee.

The gender committee will be renamed with a greater focus on policies for gender equality and family.

Last week, the National Assembly passed a government reorganization bill to dismantle the prosecution and restructure several government branches, including the finance ministry.

The bill calls for stripping the Ministry of Economy and Finance of its budget planning role and creating a budget management office under the prime minister's office in January next year.

The industry ministry's oversight of energy policy will also be transferred to the environment ministry.
