North korea: North Korea and China have reopened a land route for postal services, re-establishing the connection between North Korea's border city of Sinuiju and China's Dandong.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Sinuiju-Dandong land postal route was "officially resumed" on September 25, with the support of relevant government agencies, as announced by China's state postal service on Friday. This reopening is anticipated to facilitate postal exchanges between the citizens of the two nations.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the two border cities were active in terms of personnel and transport exchanges. However, North Korea closed its borders in early 2020, disrupting these interactions. The recent resumption of postal services follows a meeting between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders committed to enhancing cooperation and bilateral exchanges during discussions held in Beijing last month.
There is speculation that this move could pave the way for renewed economic exchanges between Pyongyang and Beijing. Such exchanges have been on hold for several years, but with efforts to normalize relations and resume high-level interactions, economic activities may soon gain momentum.
