Seoul: South Korea has nominated Hwang Jong-woo, a seasoned maritime policy expert, as the new oceans minister, highlighting his extensive experience in the field of maritime affairs. The announcement was made on Monday, as the government seeks to fill the position left vacant for 81 days following the departure of the previous minister.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hwang, aged 59, is currently the chair of the Korea Maritime Cooperation Center's international cooperation committee. His career includes several senior roles at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, where he was responsible for overseeing maritime and port-related policies. The nomination is particularly significant as it follows the resignation of former Oceans Minister Chun Jae-soo, who stepped down amid allegations of accepting bribes from the Unification Church.
In a written statement, Hwang expressed his sense of duty, especially as the first nominee since the ministry's relocation to Busan, a city located approximately 400 kilometers southeast of Seoul. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the current global uncertainty and committed to preparing diligently for the forthcoming confirmation hearing.
Hwang's academic credentials include a bachelor's degree in law and a master's degree from the Graduate School of Public Administration, both from Seoul National University. His nomination is being closely watched as South Korea continues to navigate complex maritime issues on the global stage.
