The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) has announced a runoff vote next week to select its new leader after no candidates secured a majority at the party's convention on Friday. Former Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo and Representative Jang Dong-hyeok, a close associate of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, have advanced to the runoff following their failure to achieve a majority, reflecting the party's ongoing efforts to revitalize its image post-Yoon's failed martial law attempt.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two candidates are set to engage in a final televised debate on Saturday before the runoff vote scheduled for August 24 and 25. The outcome will be confirmed next Tuesday, determining the new leader who will guide the party into next year's local elections. The PPP has been grappling with internal discord since Yoon's removal, following his impeachment upheld by the Constitutional Court in April and subsequent departure from the party in May.</P> ;
The convention has underscored the importance of candidates' positions on Yoon's impeachment, with both Kim and Jang opposing it, unlike their counterparts, Reps. Cho Kyoung-tae and Ahn Cheol-soo, who supported it but did not advance to the runoff. A survey of PPP supporters revealed Jang leading with 33 percent, closely followed by Kim at 30 percent, while Ahn and Cho received 8 and 7 percent, respectively.
Friday's convention also saw Rep. Shin Dong-uk, PPP spokesperson Kim Min-soo, and former lawmakers Yang Hyang-ja and Kim Jae-won elected to the party's Supreme Council, with Rep. Woo Jae-jun taking a position in the party's youth leadership. Observers view the convention as a critical juncture for the PPP, with the potential election of either pro-Yoon or non-Yoon figures likely to influence the party's future trajectory amidst a protracted decline in approval ratings, which have remained below 20 percent for the past seven weeks.
