Lee Vows to Persist in North Korea Dialogue Efforts Despite Tepid Response

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung stated on Thursday that North Korea has shown little enthusiasm for his peace initiatives, yet he remains committed to pursuing dialogue with Pyongyang.

According to Yonhap News Agency, marking his 100th day in office, President Lee acknowledged the lack of significant progress in inter-Korean relations, despite his government's measures to reduce tensions. He reaffirmed his dedication to fostering peace on the Korean Peninsula, emphasizing the need for sustained dialogue.

"North Korea's attitude remains cold. It is the reality we face," President Lee stated during a press conference. "Although there has been no special progress, we are constantly making efforts."

President Lee underscored the importance of collaboration with the United States, noting that Pyongyang views Washington, rather than Seoul, as the primary threat to its regime. Consequently, North Korea prioritizes its relationship with the U.S. over inter-Korean ties.

During his recent summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, President Lee offered to act as a "pacemaker," believing that Trump's engagement with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un could further peace efforts on the peninsula.

"If these peaceful efforts accumulate, even a small opening will eventually emerge," President Lee said, reiterating his commitment to reaching out to Pyongyang.
