Hegseth Calls for Allies’ Role in Strait of Hormuz, Says ‘Time for Free Riding is Over’

Washington:<Text>

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reiterated the need Friday for Asian and European allies to play a role in securing the crucial Strait of Hormuz, stating "the time for free riding is over." Hegseth emphasized the ongoing U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and vessels is expanding globally and will continue indefinitely.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hegseth made these remarks during a press briefing at the Pentagon, highlighting that Europe and Asia have benefited from U.S. protection for decades. He stressed that the U.S. efforts in the Strait of Hormuz should not be America's responsibility alone and called for allies to be more actively involved.

Hegseth underscored that Europe requires safe passage through the strait for energy imports more than the United States. He suggested that European allies need to take concrete actions rather than engage in discussions and conferences, implying that they should contribute to the maritime blockade or help secure the waterway by sending warships.

He stated that the U.S. Navy began the maritime blockade on April 13 to pressure Tehran into making a deal to end hostilities. The blockade aims to curb Iran's strategic leverage against the U.S., with the United States committed to enforcing it without hesitation.

Hegseth described the U.S. military operation against Iran as a significant mission, asserting that it prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He mentioned that Iran has the opportunity to make a favorable deal with the U.S., and the decision lies with Iran.

He concluded by affirming that the U.S. is prepared for any outcomes, with the blockade continuing to grow and expand globally.
