Lee to Dispatch Special Envoys to China Amid Diplomatic Efforts

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung is preparing to send a group of special envoys to China early next week, coinciding with his forthcoming diplomatic visits to Japan and the United States for summit discussions, sources revealed.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the delegation is set to include former National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seug, ruling Democratic Party lawmakers Kim Tae-nyeon and Park Jeung, and Roh Jae-hun, the son of former President Roh Tae-woo. A ruling party official, speaking anonymously, mentioned that while the plans are not yet finalized, they are aiming to align the departure with the anniversary of Korea-China diplomatic relations, established on August 24, 1992.

A presidential official confirmed that discussions are ongoing but refrained from providing further details. Should the visit proceed as planned, it would coincide with President Lee's scheduled trips to Tokyo on August 23-24 and subsequent visit to Washington. During these visits, he is slated to hold summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump.

The potential envoy dispatch underscores President Lee's dedication to nurturing relations with China, in parallel with his engagements with the U.S. and Japan. Ongoing talks between Seoul and Beijing are aimed at arranging a meeting between the special envoys and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as stated by the sources.

The delegation is anticipated to deliver a letter from President Lee to Chinese President Xi Jinping, emphasizing the significance of bilateral relations and inviting him to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit scheduled to take place in South Korea later in October.
