Singapore: President Lee Jae Myung on Monday sought Singapore's support for South Korea's efforts to resume talks with North Korea and progress toward peace on the Korean Peninsula during his state visit to the Southeast Asian nation.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the request was made during a state dinner hosted by Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Lee emphasized the significance of the venue, which hosted the landmark 2018 summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, focused on Pyongyang's denuclearization efforts.

Lee remarked that the dinner venue symbolizes Singapore's peaceful diplomatic leadership, marked by maintaining friendly relations based on trust and respect with countries of differing positions. He expressed confidence that Singapore would continue to support South Korea's efforts to foster dialogue between the two Koreas and achieve meaningful progress toward peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Earlier in the day, during a summit with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Lee expressed gratitude for Wong's support of Seoul's efforts to renew talks with Pyongyang and to promote peace and stability in the region. Lee also called for Singapore to play a constructive role in regional peace efforts.

Lee has previously urged North Korea to return to the negotiating table with the United States, as expressed in his speech marking the March 1 Independence Movement. However, North Korea remains unresponsive to these overtures. At a recent key party congress, Pyongyang dismissed dialogue with Seoul but appeared open to talks with Washington, while unveiling a five-year plan and goals for key sectors.
