Lee Highlights Impact of U.S.-Iran War on North Korea’s Nuclear Stance

Brussels: The U.S.-Iran war has influenced North Korea's reluctance to abandon its nuclear weapons program, according to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. In a recent interview with The Economist, Lee expressed that the ongoing conflict has made it even less likely for North Korea to disarm its nuclear arsenal. He also noted that the "unique personality" of U.S. President Trump could play a crucial role in rekindling dialogue with the North.

According to Yonhap News Agency, President Lee reiterated South Korea's commitment to nonproliferation, emphasizing that it is neither "desirable nor realistic" for South Korea to develop nuclear weapons. Lee stressed the importance of self-reliance in defense matters, stating, "When it comes to the defense of our nation, we must take matters into our own hands."

Lee addressed the political climate post the martial law declaration by former President Yoon Suk Yeol, expressing optimism about South Korea's potential to rise as a global leader. He proposed a basic income grant to distribute excess profits among the general public, highlighting the ongoing debate on sharing windfall gains from AI-driven growth by companies like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.

Presidential officials clarified that Lee's comments were not directed at any specific company or issue but were consistent with his views on efficiently utilizing excess tax revenues generated by the AI boom. The remarks were intended to address challenges during the transition to an AI-driven era and sustain the capitalist market order.

In a statement, the presidential office emphasized that Lee's comments were about "tasks of the time" rather than specific companies, focusing on sustaining the market order during the AI transition. During a press conference marking his first year in office, Lee differentiated between using increased tax revenues from corporate earnings and directly utilizing corporate earnings or imposing extra taxes.

President Lee cautioned against imposing additional taxes on foreign and local firms' increased profits, as it might deter future investments in South Korea. He acknowledged the complexity of the issue and suggested that it could prompt international discussions to find a resolution.
