Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung held a meeting with young researchers and science students Thursday and discussed ways to expand alternative military service options as part of a broader reform to the military system. During the meeting held at Cheong Wa Dae, Lee mentioned that his administration was reviewing an overhaul of the military, including measures to substitute mandatory military service for other forms of service.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee addressed the challenges faced by young men who are required to serve in the military, highlighting the career interruptions they experience, which can lead to conflict and frustration. In response to a suggestion from a student for more research opportunities during military service, Lee revealed that his administration was considering such measures.
Lee emphasized his commitment to implementing significant changes in the military. He indicated plans to offer young men the chance to gain expertise in advanced technology and weapons systems during their service, rather than spending it unproductively. Additionally, he proposed the creation of research units within the military as an alternative to placing young researchers in different forms of service.
The meeting was attended by approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students who have received national scholarships, along with 35 middle and high school students who have been awarded Olympiad honors.
