Busan: President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday called for thorough preparations for Busan's hosting of a meeting of a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) committee in July. The president made the call during an event to review preparations as South Korea's second-largest city is set to host the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee from July 19-29.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the committee is responsible for selecting properties for UNESCO's World Heritage List, and the upcoming committee is expected to bring together officials from 196 member states. It marks the first time South Korea will host a session of the committee since joining the World Heritage Convention in 1988.
Lee described the upcoming session as an "important occasion to showcase South Korea's advanced cultural capacity and global leadership on the world stage," calling for all-out efforts for preparations. The president emphasized the need for thorough preparedness, particularly in transportation, accommodation, and safety.
