Landmark Moments in Korean History: From Independence Fighters to E-Commerce Giants

Seoul: Today in Korean history, several significant events mark the nation's past, including pivotal moments in politics, military, and technology. The journey begins in 1948 with Korean independence fighters, notably Kim Koo and Kim Kyu-sik, who issued a statement opposing the U.N. General Assembly's resolution to hold a separate general election in southern Korea. This marked a critical stance against foreign intervention in Korea's sovereignty.

According to Yonhap News Agency, another major event took place in 1971 when South Korean ground troops took over the responsibility for defending the entire 155-mile truce line dividing the Korean Peninsula. This shift followed years of partial U.S. military oversight, highlighting South Korea's growing autonomy in military affairs.

Fast forward to 1993, North Korea made headlines by announcing its decision to withdraw from the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, signaling a contentious period in international relations regarding nuclear capabilities.

In 2004, South Korea's political landscape faced turmoil as the opposition-controlled parliament impeached President Roh Moo-hyun, accusing him of incapability and violating election laws. However, the Constitutional Court later ruled that the reasons were not sufficient to remove him from office.

A notable achievement came in 2009 when Professor Sung Hyun-ho of Ewha Womans University was elected to the Guiding Committee for the General Bathymetric Chart of Oceans under the International Hydrographic Organization, marking a first for South Korea.

In 2011, President Lee Myung-bak embarked on a significant four-day visit to the United Arab Emirates, emphasizing economic cooperation between the two nations.

The technological prowess of machines over humans was demonstrated in 2016 when Google's AI program AlphaGo secured its third consecutive victory against South Korean Go player Lee Se-dol, a landmark moment in AI development.

2017 saw the departure of former President Park Geun-hye from the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae after the Constitutional Court upheld her impeachment, symbolizing a shift in South Korea's political dynamics.

Finally, in 2021, South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang Inc. made a historic debut on the New York Stock Exchange with an initial public offering price of US$35 per share, marking a milestone in South Korea's economic and technological development on the global stage.
