Korean National Sports Council Hosts First Baseball Championship for Students

Seoul: Korea's national sports council made history in 1920 by organizing the country's inaugural baseball championship for junior and senior high school students at Seoul's Baejae High School. This marked a significant development in promoting organized sports among young students in Korea.

According to Yonhap News Agency, several other notable events occurred on this day in Korean history. In 1933, the Korean Language Society announced the first orthography for the Korean language, a crucial step in standardizing and preserving the language. In contrast, on the international front, the year 1983 saw Burma, now Myanmar, sever diplomatic ties with North Korea after a bombing incident in Rangoon, which was attributed to North Korean agents. This attack tragically resulted in the deaths of seventeen South Korean officials.

In more recent history, 2002 marked the first-ever nationwide walkout by unionized government workers in South Korea, highlighting growing labor movements. By 2013, political tensions were evident as North Korea criticized South Korea's "inter-Korean trust-building policy," suggesting it fueled political confrontation.

A significant political scandal unfolded in 2016 when President Park Geun-hye agreed to an investigation over corruption allegations involving her confidante. Her impeachment was passed by the National Assembly later that year and upheld by the Constitutional Court in 2017. Meanwhile, the entertainment industry mourned the loss of beloved actor Shin Sung-il in 2018, who passed away due to lung cancer at the age of 81.

Finally, in 2019, a monumental trade agreement was reached involving ASEAN member states, South Korea, and five other countries, establishing the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a significant economic collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region.
