Seoul: The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced on Tuesday that it has revised its regulations concerning the hiring of national team head coaches, now requiring consultations with clubs before recruiting their coaches. This change marks a significant shift from the previous protocol, where the KFA only needed to inform clubs after appointing their coaches, often leaving clubs without their key personnel unexpectedly. According to Yonhap News Agency, the amendment comes in response to recent criticisms directed at the KFA, notably after hiring Hong Myung-bo as the senior men's national team head coach while he was still under contract with the K League 1 club Ulsan HD FC. The move, which occurred in July, sparked backlash from fans of Ulsan and other K League clubs, who felt that the domestic league was being undermined. In addition to the changes regarding head coaches, the KFA has also streamlined the process for hiring assistant coaches and trainers for national teams. These positions will no longe r require approval from the KFA's board of directors, aligning with practices observed in other countries. This decision follows a monthslong investigation by the sports ministry into the KFA's hiring practices, which revealed challenges with the approval process for national team assistants and trainers. The KFA has also announced that its presidential election will occur on January 8, 2025. The election committee is set to be formed by December 12, with candidate registration scheduled between December 25 and 27. The new president's term will start on January 22. Current president Chung Mong-gyu is expected to seek a fourth term, despite facing potential suspension from duties as recommended by the sports ministry following the inquiry. The KFA is considering appealing the ministry's recommendation, which would require a response within two months if formally submitted.
