Kim Hye-seong Scores NLDS-Clinching Run for Dodgers in Postseason Debut

Los angeles: Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers made his Major League Baseball (MLB) postseason debut a memorable one, scoring his team's series-clinching run as a pinch runner. The Dodgers walked off the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in 11 innings in Game 4 of the National League Division Series (NLDS) at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday (local time). The Dodgers claimed the best-of-five series 3-1, as they advanced to the National League Championship Series and moved a step closer to winning their second straight World Series crown.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim made the rosters for both the Wild Card Series and the NLDS but had not seen any postseason action until coming on as the pinch runner for Tommy Edman, who hit a one-out single in the bottom 11th. Two batters later, Kim advanced to third on a single by Max Muncy and represented the winning run 90 feet away. Orion Kerkering came on to replace Jesus Luzardo on the mound but walked Kike Hernandez to load the bases.

Andy Pages then chopped a grounder back to Kerkering. The pitcher bobbled the ball and despite having plenty of time to throw to first to get the final out of the inning, he made a wide throw to home plate. As the ball sailed wide of catcher J.T. Realmuto, Kim crossed the plate. Kim appears to have missed the plate at first and came back to step on it to make sure he'd given the Dodgers the win.

In the NLCS, the Dodgers will play the winner of the other NLDS between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. Kim is the only South Korean player in this year's MLB postseason.
