SEOUL: In response to the tragic Jeju Air plane crash that resulted in the loss of 179 lives, South Korea's ruling and opposition parties have united in their commitment to support the families of the victims and expedite recovery efforts. The crash occurred on Sunday at Muan International Airport, located approximately 290 kilometers south of Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, prominent political figures from both sides visited the crash site to offer condolences and assistance. Rep. Kweon Seong-dong, acting leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), expressed his regret to the families during his visit. He pledged to provide support for funeral services and emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth behind the tragedy. Rep. Kwon Young-se, who is set to become the PPP leader, was also scheduled to visit the airport following the confirmation of his appointment.

Meanwhile, Rep. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), met with the victims' families at the airport and later held a party meeting in Muan to discuss response measures. He stressed that while understanding the cause of the crash is crucial, the immediate focus should be on recovery efforts. National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik also held discussions with acting President Choi Sang-mok on recovery initiatives and planned to visit a memorial altar for the victims.

In light of the tragedy, most National Assembly events were canceled, and the DP has temporarily halted its political campaign against the ruling party. This includes postponing four parliamentary committee sessions that were to address the brief imposition of martial law by President Yoon Suk Yeol.
