Jamsu Bridge in Seoul to Become Pedestrian-Only by Next Year

Seoul:The Jamsu Bridge, part of the double-decker Banpo Bridge in Seoul, will be converted into the city's first pedestrian-only bridge over the Han River by next year.

According to Yonhap News Agency, vehicle traffic on the Jamsu Bridge will be completely restricted starting October 26, with construction set to be completed by August next year. The project will involve widening the pedestrian deck, paving, and other preparations to facilitate cultural events and festivals.

During the construction phase, pedestrians and cyclists will still have access to the bridge, as work zones will be kept separate from pedestrian paths.

Since its inauguration in 1976, the Jamsu Bridge has been a crucial connection between the northern and southern banks of the Han River. In 2008, two of its four traffic lanes were repurposed for pedestrians and cyclists. Recently, it has served as a cultural venue, hosting events like the "Car-free Jamsu Bridge Festival."

Due to its lower height compared to other bridges, visitors to the Jamsu Bridge can enjoy close-up views of the Han River and the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain on the Banpo Bridge. The city government plans to enhance these features by creating 22 new river-viewing spots and installing transparent decks at two navigation channels, offering views of the river below as vessels pass.
