Washington: The U.S. military operation against Iran will conclude when President Donald Trump determines that the military objectives have been met and the Islamic Republic is in a state of "unconditional surrender," according to a statement from the White House on Tuesday. The administration emphasized that this decision would stand irrespective of any formal declaration from Tehran.
According to Yonhap News Agency, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, during a press briefing, revealed that the U.S. military is developing further strategies to maintain open passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Leavitt assured that the recent escalation in oil and gas prices is a "temporary" issue. Her comments come amid increasing concern over the duration of the U.S. operation, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," and its potential impact on oil prices as the midterm elections approach, with control of Congress at stake.
"The operations will ultimately cease when the commander-in-chief ascertains that the military objectives have been fully realized and that Iran is in a position of complete and unconditional surrender, regardless of their acknowledgment," Leavitt stated. U.S. officials have clarified that the military operation aims to dismantle Iran's ballistic missile capabilities, neutralize its Navy, obstruct its nuclear armament path, and weaken Iran-backed militia factions in the region.
Leavitt further explained Trump's reference to Tehran's "unconditional surrender," highlighting that it does not imply an expected verbal admission from the Iranian regime. Instead, it signifies a strategic dismantling of Iran's ability to pose a credible threat, particularly through its ballistic missile arsenal.
Leavitt also addressed the pressing issue of rising oil prices, which have surged to nearly US$120 per barrel recently. "The American public can rest assured that the current spike in oil and gas prices is temporary, and the operation will eventually lead to lower gas prices," she asserted, adding that once the objectives of Operation Epic Fury are accomplished, Americans could anticipate a significant drop in oil and gas prices.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Leavitt mentioned that the U.S. military is exploring various options to ensure the continuity of shipping activities. While she withheld specific details, she affirmed the possibility of U.S. Navy escorts for oil tankers through the strait, though none have occurred yet. This clarification followed a social media post by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, which falsely claimed a successful escort.
In a related development, Trump announced via social media that the U.S. military had "completely" destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying ships, with plans for further actions. He also issued a stern warning to Iran about the placement of mines in the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that failure to remove them would result in unprecedented military consequences. Conversely, he suggested that the removal of any mines would be viewed as a positive step.
