Investigators Make Third Attempt to Question President Yoon at Seoul Detention Center

Seoul: Investigators arrived at the Seoul Detention Center on Wednesday to make their third attempt to forcibly bring in President Yoon Suk Yeol for questioning over his failed martial law bid. A vehicle belonging to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) was seen entering the detention center in Uiwang, south of Seoul, at 10:20 a.m., shortly after the agency's chief announced the effort.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the CIO is considering questioning Yoon at the detention center if their repeated attempts fail. "President Yoon Suk Yeol's side also needs to respect the decision of the judiciary," Oh Dong-woon, the CIO chief, emphasized to reporters. "We will try to forcibly bring him in today." This decision comes as a result of President Yoon's refusal to comply with orders to appear for questioning regarding his December 3 declaration of martial law.

Investigators had previously visited the detention center on both Monday and Tuesday to bring Yoon in, but withdrew after encountering resistance from Yoon's representatives. "If there are objections, they can follow the steps to appeal within the legal framework," Oh stated, highlighting the available legal recourse.

Under human rights protection regulations, questioning a suspect without consent is prohibited after 9 p.m. President Yoon returned to the detention center past this time on Tuesday, following his impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court and a stop at a military hospital for a health examination. Oh remarked that the situation resembled "a game of hide-and-seek" when asked about Yoon's hospital visit, adding that the investigators chose to wait at the detention center out of respect for human rights concerns.

Oh acknowledged that Yoon's delayed return seemed to be a strategy to avoid questioning, expressing regret over the situation.
