Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading automaker, unveiled its first production model under the all-electric Ioniq brand, specifically tailored for the Chinese market, at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show. The introduction of the Ioniq V marks a significant step for Hyundai as it prepares to launch the electric vehicle (EV) later this year.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ioniq V is built on a platform developed in collaboration with Hyundai's Chinese partner, Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC Group). The vehicle incorporates a battery system developed with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL). The Ioniq V can travel more than 600 kilometers on a single charge and includes an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS).
Derived from the Venus Concept, the Ioniq V introduces Hyundai Motor's new design language, "The Origin," for its all-electric lineup in China. This design philosophy emphasizes a "best first impression" approach. Over the next five years, Hyundai plans to launch 20 new models in China, including a new electrified sport utility vehicle (SUV) set for release in the first half of 2027.
Hyundai, known for its Sonata sedans and Santa Fe SUVs, aims to achieve annual sales of 500,000 units in China, the world's largest automobile market. Jose Munoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor, highlighted the importance of the Chinese market, citing its demanding EV consumers, rapid development cycles, and advanced innovation ecosystem.
Chang Jae-hoon, vice chair of Hyundai Motor Group, expressed a strong commitment to reviving Hyundai's presence in China, where the company reported less than a 1 percent market share last year. During a media event at the Beijing Auto Show, he emphasized the company's strategy to deploy the Ioniq brand in China and adapt it to local market conditions.
To strengthen its foothold in China, Hyundai plans to expand its partnerships with CATL and Momenta, both of which have contributed to the development of the Ioniq V's battery system and ADAS technologies, respectively.
