One such moment occurred in 1936 when the daily newspaper Dong-A Ilbo published an image of Korean Olympic marathon gold medalist Sohn Kee-chung with the Japanese flag on his chest erased. Sohn competed in the Berlin Olympics under the Japanese flag, as Korea was then a colony of Japan. The Japanese authorities responded by shutting down the newspaper, later allowing it to resume publication only after it dismissed the responsible journalist and issued an apology.

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong was sentenced to five years in prison for bribery and embezzlement in a corruption scandal that also led to the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye.
