Edmonton: Hyundai Rotem Co., the defense and train subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, announced it has secured a 320 billion-won (US$220.6 million) contract to supply 32 trams for Edmonton's light-rail transit system. Under the agreement signed Tuesday in Edmonton, Hyundai Rotem will provide high-floor light-rail vehicles (LRVs) for the Capital and Metro lines in Alberta's capital.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Rotem is set to deliver all vehicles sequentially through 2032. The new trams will replace some of the existing LRVs and support service expansion to accommodate rising commuter demand. The vehicles will feature energy-efficient technologies and advanced temperature control systems, ensuring comfortable conditions even at temperatures as low as minus 40 C. They will also include a forward collision warning system for enhanced safety.

This recent deal builds on Hyundai Rotem's previous 218.8 billion-won contract in 2021, where the company agreed to supply low-floor LRVs for Edmonton's Valley Line West. The first batch of those trams was delivered in August. A Hyundai Rotem official stated, "Based on our experience in railway projects at home and abroad and cooperation with the local operator, we will seek to contribute to the safe and stable operation of the light-rail system."
