Texas: Hyundai Engineering and Construction Co. (Hyundai E and C) revealed its capabilities in large-scale nuclear power plant construction at a seminar in the United States, aiming to secure engineering contracts amidst a resurgence in nuclear energy interest.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the company organized a nuclear technology seminar in Texas on Tuesday to enhance understanding of nuclear power projects and solidify its standing in the U.S. market. The event attracted representatives from around 100 U.S. nuclear power and construction firms. The seminar featured presentations on nuclear construction standards, plant structures, and workforce development.

Hyundai E and C noted that the hiatus in nuclear construction has led to a reduction in the U.S. nuclear workforce and supply chain, presenting challenges for executing large-scale projects. The seminar aimed to foster partnerships with competent companies and boost competitiveness in the U.S. market.

Previously, Hyundai E and C secured a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract with Fermi America for constructing four nuclear units under Project Matador in Texas. The company is currently engaged in site layout planning, cooling system assessments, and other evaluations, with plans to obtain an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract within the first half of this year.

The partnership between Hyundai E and C and Fermi America is geared towards establishing a long-term framework for nuclear power plant construction in Texas and other U.S. regions. Mesut Uzman, chief nuclear construction officer at Fermi America, highlighted the rapidly increasing AI-driven electricity demand and emphasized the importance of swift power infrastructure development to meet AI and industrial growth needs. Hyundai E and C's industrial scale and execution discipline are critical for delivering major energy projects like Project Matador.
