SEOUL: Hanwha Systems Co., a prominent defense industry unit within Hanwha Group, has announced plans to discontinue its aviation satellite communication antenna subsidiary, Hanwha Phasor, to concentrate on its ground-based antenna business for military applications. According to Yonhap News Agency, Hanwha Systems will shut down Hanwha Phasor, which was formed after acquiring the British company Phasor Solutions Ltd. in June 2020. Hanwha Phasor was engaged in developing electronically steerable antennas designed for high-speed communication across maritime, terrestrial, and in-flight platforms, with a significant focus on ensuring stable internet connectivity for aircraft. Initially, Hanwha Systems anticipated that the technology would integrate well with in-flight video services and telematics. However, the company has decided to pivot its focus towards ground-based antenna solutions tailored to the domestic defense market, citing lower-than-expected profitability in the aviation sector as a key reason for the strategic shift. "A management decision was made to discontinue Hanwha Phasor due to the uncertainty of securing profitability," a Hanwha Systems official stated. The company aims to leverage its expertise in ground-based solutions to bolster its offerings within the defense industry.
