Greenpeace Activists Detained After Protest on LPG Tanker.

Pyeongtaek: Police have detained four foreign Greenpeace activists for questioning after they illegally boarded an LPG tanker and staged a protest demanding a reduction in plastic production, officials said Sunday. The Coast Guard in Pyeongtaek, located 65 kilometers southwest of Seoul, reported that the four individuals were detained on charges of vessel trespassing and obstruction of official duties. According to Yonhap News Agency, the activists are accused of illegally boarding a 2,999-ton LPG tanker off the coast of Incheon at 10:42 a.m. the previous day. They reportedly painted on the hull and staged a protest atop a 12-meter pole on the deck. The protest was aimed at drawing attention to their demand for a reduction in plastic production, coinciding with the fifth round of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-5), which was taking place in the southeastern port city of Busan starting Monday. Coast Guard forces managed to bring the activists down approximately 12 hours after they boarded the vessel, around 10:25 p.m. on Saturday. They were subsequently transferred to the Coast Guard agency in Pyeongtaek for further investigation after being detained at the scene.
