Seoul: South Korea's quarantine agency has started accepting applications on Monday to find new homes for eight detection dogs relieved of their service duties. The program aims to aid retired sniffer dogs, previously active at airports and seaports to detect unauthorized livestock and agricultural goods, in transitioning to a new life after their retirement.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency will review applications and conduct on-site evaluations with animal rights advocacy groups to identify suitable homes for the dogs. This thorough process is expected to be completed over a two-month period, concluding by late March.
To assist the retired detection dogs in settling smoothly into their new homes, the government plans to continue offering various support, such as discounts on veterinary treatments. This initiative follows the successful adoption of six retired sniffer dogs last year.
"We ask for attention and support to help the retired sniffer dogs who have dedicated themselves to the country begin a fresh life with new families," a senior official from the agency stated.
