FM Cho and U.S. Secretary of State Rubio Commit to Close Coordination on North Korean Nuclear Issues


Seoul: South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul held his first phone call with new U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, agreeing to maintain close cooperation on North Korea’s nuclear issues, as reported by the foreign ministry.



According to Yonhap News Agency, the conversation followed the recent inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump. During the call, the two top diplomats discussed not only bilateral relations and North Korean nuclear concerns but also trilateral cooperation involving Japan.



Cho extended his congratulations to Rubio on his new role and expressed hope for further development of the 70-year South Korea-U.S. alliance during the Trump administration. Rubio highlighted the alliance as a crucial element of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and the broader region, underscoring the U.S.’ unwavering defense commitment to South Korea.



The ministers reiterated the importance of close coordination on North Korean nuclear issues and committed to advancing trilateral cooperation with Japan. Additionally, Rubio invited Cho to visit the U.S., with plans being coordinated for in-person talks in Washington at the earliest opportunity.



Cho emphasized the need for robust communication between the nations, proposing a phone call between acting President Choi Sang-mok and President Trump. Rubio assured Cho of his commitment to facilitating this communication.
