Incheon: A man fatally shot his son using a homemade gun during a birthday celebration intended for the shooter's father, according to police reports. The tragic incident unfolded at an apartment in Incheon, west of Seoul, late Sunday evening.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the 63-year-old suspect was apprehended without a warrant early Monday after authorities were notified of the shooting at 9:31 p.m. The suspect is accused of discharging two shots at his son, who was in his 30s, during the party. The event was attended by several family members, including the man's daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and friends. The police have not yet determined the motive behind the shooting.
The homemade gun, described as pipe-formed, inflicted fatal wounds to the son's chest. Despite being transported to a hospital, the son was later declared dead. In the aftermath, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's special unit uncovered 15 explosive devices at the suspect's residence, which were subsequently dismantled and secured. Notably, one device was rigged with an ignition mechanism connected to a plastic bottle containing a flammable liquid, set to detonate at noon Monday.
The investigation further revealed two homemade guns used in the shooting, alongside nine additional firearms located in the suspect's vehicle. Authorities also discovered five to six metal pipes at his residence. The search of the suspect's home in Seoul's northern district of Dobong was prompted by his admission to investigators about installing an explosive device there. As a precaution, 105 residents were evacuated from the building to ensure their safety before the search was conducted.
