Yeongcheon: Three employees were injured, one seriously, following an explosion at a cosmetic material factory in Yeongcheon, a city located about 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The explosion led to a significant fire, according to firefighters who responded to the incident.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the explosion occurred shortly before 1 p.m. at a chemical factory within an industrial complex. The factory, which specializes in producing materials for cosmetics, became engulfed in flames following the explosion. Firefighters reported that one employee sustained serious injuries, while two others suffered minor injuries. An additional employee was reported missing.
The fire spread quickly due to the factory's proximity to multiple structures, including dormitories. A fire response alert was issued, necessitating the involvement of all local fire station personnel. However, efforts to enter the factory were hampered by intense flames and toxic smoke. Firefighting helicopters were deployed to lead the efforts in extinguishing the fire.
The factory is known for producing chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, used in cosmetic products. The explosion's impact was felt beyond the factory premises, with a convenience store located 300 meters away experiencing shattered windows, and residents in nearby apartments reported feeling the ground shake.
Fire authorities are currently investigating to determine the cause of the explosion and to assess the full extent of the damage caused by the fire.
