Ex-President Yoon and Wife Kim Reunite in Courtroom for First Time in Months

Seoul: Former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, reunited in a courtroom on Tuesday for the first time since July. Yoon has been in custody following his failed attempt at martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim, who has been incarcerated since August due to various corruption charges, appeared at the Seoul Central District Court to provide testimony in her husband's trial. Yoon faces charges of violating the Political Funds Act by accepting free opinion poll results before his March 2022 election.

As Kim entered the courtroom, supported by correctional officers, Yoon watched her intently. When she took an oath and sat down, Yoon offered a faint smile. Kim was dressed in her customary court attire: a black suit and white shirt, her hair tied back in a ponytail.

Despite being questioned more than 40 times by special counsel Min Joong-ki's team, Kim refrained from testifying, sitting quietly, slightly hunched and looking downward. During the questioning, Yoon's gaze remained on Kim, and as she exited, he nodded and smiled broadly, though Kim seemed to avoid making eye contact.

The special counsel team summoned Kim to testify. Both she and Yoon have been indicted for allegedly accepting 270 million won (approximately US$183,000) in free opinion poll results from a self-proclaimed power broker. In return, they were to secure the nomination of former People Power Party Rep. Kim Young-sun for a parliamentary by-election in June 2022.

Kim is undergoing a separate trial for the same charges and was acquitted in her first-instance trial in January. During Tuesday's session, the court announced that it plans to conclude the trial hearings next month, with a verdict expected in June.

Previously, the couple had appeared in court simultaneously for different cases but had not met, as correctional officers ensured they did not cross paths.
