Seoul: Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), vowed to continue to work hard for democracy and his political beliefs Saturday, a day after a Seoul court sentenced him to a suspended one-year prison term for lying as a candidate during the previous presidential campaign. "Lee Jae-myung won't die. Democracy won't die. The future of this country won't die," Lee said as he attended an anti-government rally calling for a special probe into allegations involving first lady Kim Keon Hee, in central Seoul. According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee stressed his commitment to the legacy of former President Roh Moo-hyun, insisting that since entering politics, he has been dedicated to eradicating corruption and holding unjust individuals accountable. He expressed that his aim has always been to serve as a faithful representative of the people, rather than focusing on his individual identity. Lee's comments came as a response to the Seoul Central District Court's recent verdict, which found him guilty of making false statements, in violation of the Public Official Election Act. The court sentenced Lee to a one-year prison term, which has been suspended for two years. The ruling, if upheld, could result in Lee losing his parliamentary seat and being barred from running in the 2027 presidential election, a scenario that could severely impact the DP and alter South Korea's political dynamics. Lee has announced his intention to appeal the verdict, arguing that he found the "basic facts" of the court's decision difficult to accept.
