Seoul: A task force of the Democratic Party (DP) convened its inaugural meeting to formulate strategies against U.S. President Donald Trump's recent tariff policy, signaling the party's intent to establish itself as a competent governing entity in the lead-up to the June 3 election.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting was prompted by Trump's introduction of "reciprocal" tariffs targeting trade partners, which include a significant 25 percent duty on imports from South Korea. The U.S. administration has announced a 90-day suspension of these measures to facilitate negotiations.

Kim Hyung-jong, the head of the task force, highlighted the U.S.'s comprehensive negotiation strategy that intertwines trade, defense costs, energy, and exchange rates. "We must mobilize all national resources to respond with a highly strategic approach," he stated. Kim also cautioned against allowing an ousted government to manage negotiations critical to national interests, indirectly referencing acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo.

Analysts suggest that the DP's initiative aims to mitigate public concern over impending trade discussions with the U.S. and to challenge Han, who has been actively engaging with Washington and is seen as a potential presidential candidate.
