Seoul: Disney and Kang Full, the writer of Disney+'s upcoming Korean original series, "Light Shop," share a unique ability to move people's hearts through their work, producer Kim Hee-won said Wednesday, citing the connection as one of the main reasons behind the two's second collaboration after the 2023 hit "Moving." According to Yonhap News Agency, the highly anticipated series, scheduled for release later this year, is based on Kang Full's popular 2011 webtoon of the same name. The eight-part series explores the lives of strangers dealing with past traumas, who are drawn to a mystical light shop run by a mysterious shopkeeper, portrayed by Ju Ji-hoon. Kim Hee-won, making his directorial debut with "Light Shop," emphasized the importance of emotional resonance in the series. "It tells a unique story, and I wanted its uniqueness to be embraced by viewers in a way that feels appropriate and not overbearing," he stated at the Disney Content Showcase 2024 in Singapore. Reflecting on his transition from actor to director, Kim described the experience as both nerve-wracking and exhilarating. He expressed his excitement for the series premiere on December 4th, indicating his eagerness to see how audiences receive his work. Kang Full praised the adaptation, noting that the series captures the depth of the original webtoon while enhancing its emotional richness on screen. "The emotions that couldn't be fully expressed in the webtoon have been beautifully brought to life on screen, making the story even richer than the original," he said. The Disney Content Showcase 2024, held at Singapore's Marina Bay Sands, also featured Disney's plans for its 2025-2026 theatrical and streaming slate. The event drew over 500 journalists from 12 countries, highlighting Disney's continued commitment to the Asia-Pacific region. Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, underscored the significance of the Asia-Pacific market for Disney, citing its rich storytelling potential and the region's vibrant talent pool. The showcase i ncluded previews of upcoming projects from Disney's various studios, including 20th Century Studios, Pixar, and Marvel Studios. Notably, Korean content continues to play a significant role in Disney's global strategy. Luke Kang, president of The Walt Disney Company Asia Pacific, highlighted the strong performance of Korean originals on Disney+, with nine of the top 15 best-performing international titles being Korean last year. This success underscores the global appeal of Korean storytelling and its ability to resonate with diverse audiences. The influence of Korean content was evident at the showcase, with additional sessions dedicated to five more upcoming Korean original titles. Disney attributes its streaming business's growth to the compelling narratives and widespread appeal of Korean content, viewing the Korean market as a crucial testing ground for its global endeavors. Kim, making his debut as producer with the series, said he aimed to create a show that resonates emotionally with audiences witho ut feeling overwhelming.
