Seoul: The ruling Democratic Party (DP) is set to hold a national convention in August to elect a new leader, as announced by party officials following their significant victory in the recent local elections. The decision comes as part of the party's efforts to consolidate its leadership and strategize for future political challenges.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP leadership reached a consensus to schedule the convention for August 17. Rep. Jo Seoung-lae, the party's secretary general, communicated this decision to reporters at the National Assembly after a meeting of the party's supreme council. The newly elected leader will succeed Rep. Jung Chung-rae, a four-term lawmaker facing increasing pressure after the party's losses in crucial electoral contests, including the Seoul mayoral race and a parliamentary by-election in Busan.

Rep. Jung Chung-rae is anticipated to seek another term, despite the internal party pressure. Potential challengers for the leadership position include Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, who recently offered his resignation, and Rep. Song Young-gil, a former DP leader who rejoined the National Assembly as a six-term lawmaker following his success in the recent by-elections.

The Democratic Party has outlined a procedure for the leadership election. If four or more candidates enter the race, a preliminary primary will be conducted before the main primary, followed by regional primaries to select the party chief and supreme council members. This structured process is intended to ensure a fair and comprehensive selection of the new leadership.
