Daejeon: The central city of Daejeon has been short-listed as one of three final candidates to host the Invictus Games, an international sports competition for injured service members, the veterans ministry said Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Daejeon, approximately 135 kilometers south of Seoul, is competing alongside Aalborg in Denmark and San Diego in the United States to host the 2029 games. The list of potential host cities was narrowed down from an initial six cities and regions.

The ministry expressed that hosting the games in Daejeon-home to the National Cemetery and a veterans hospital-would be significant in raising awareness for veterans, marking it as the first event of its kind to be held in Asia.

The Invictus Games Foundation plans to announce the final winner in July next year after conducting on-site visits and a bidding presentation.

Founded by Britain's Prince Harry in 2014, the Invictus Games is a multinational sports competition for wounded, injured, and sick service members. Since 2023, the games have been organized as a biennial event.

If Daejeon is selected to host the event, the city is expected to welcome approximately 3,000 athletes and officials from 25 nations.
