Seoul:An increase in cyberattacks on major banks has led the financial regulator to instruct financial firms to scrutinize their computer security systems. This move follows a series of incidents where personal information was leaked.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Financial Services Commission's directive came in response to a data breach at Hana Bank, which resulted in the leakage of personal details of 89 customers. The compromised information included resident registration numbers, names, addresses, and phone numbers.
Hana Bank has apologized to its customers and promised to take all necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Meanwhile, Woori Bank and NH Nonghyup Bank reported attempted hacking attacks but successfully thwarted unauthorized access, preventing any data leaks.
Industry sources revealed that customer information at KB Kookmin Bank was also breached, affecting over 100 customers. This breach followed a similar incident at Shinhan Bank, where personal information of approximately 25,000 customers, including annual incomes, names, and phone numbers, was leaked.
The sources indicated that Shinhan Bank's hackers are suspected to be operating from overseas and used advanced artificial intelligence tools in their attacks. In response, a police division specializing in cyberterrorism has launched a preliminary investigation into the wave of bank hacks.
