Seoul: The Korea Customs Service (KCS) announced Thursday that it convened a meeting with local steelmakers to deliberate on strategies to counter the latest U.S. tariff measures affecting foreign steel imports.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting, which took place on Wednesday, provided a platform for the Korea Iron and Steel Association to express their worries about the increasing influx of illegally undervalued steel products amidst the growing trade tensions spurred by the tariff policies of the Donald Trump administration. These policies include a 25 percent tariff on all steel imports, initiated on March 12, as part of a comprehensive approach to curb trade deficits and bolster domestic manufacturing. Furthermore, the U.S. government has also revoked duty-free import quotas that were previously extended to South Korea and other nations.

During the meeting, the KCS informed industry representatives about its ongoing enforcement measures, particularly focusing on inspections aimed at detecting violations of origin labeling regulations and efforts to circumvent antidumping duties. "We will push forward with effective policies to protect the domestic industry, based on the input and concerns shared during the meeting," a KCS official stated.
