Seoul: A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of violence and attempted arson during a riot connected to former President Yoon Suk Yeol in January. The Seoul Western District Court delivered the sentence to the man, identified by his surname Shim, for entering the courthouse through a broken window and assaulting a police officer on January 19.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this is the most severe sentence given to those indicted in relation to the riot, which was triggered by the court's decision to extend Yoon's detention following his December 3 declaration of martial law. Out of the 128 individuals indicted, 83 have been sentenced so far.

The court noted, "A heavy sentence is inevitable as (the defendant) also attempted arson by buying a lighter from a nearby convenience store, posing serious harm to the judiciary and endangering public safety."

In a separate case, a 48-year-old man, surnamed Lee, received a three-year prison sentence for his involvement in the riot. Lee faced charges for damaging a judge's office door upon entering the courthouse during the riot.
