Court Acquits Ex-President Yoon of Perjury Over Testimony at Ex-PM’s Trial

Seoul: A Seoul court on Thursday acquitted former President Yoon Suk Yeol of giving false testimony during former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo's insurrection trial. Yoon had faced charges of perjury for allegedly creating a false impression during Han's trial last year regarding the planning of a Cabinet meeting before declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the court found that the evidence was insufficient to prove that Yoon intentionally provided false testimony. The prosecution had argued that Yoon's testimony misled the court by suggesting that the Cabinet meeting was planned before Han's suggestion. However, the defense successfully argued that Yoon's statements did not meet the legal threshold for perjury.

The acquittal marks a significant legal victory for the former president, who has been embroiled in legal battles since leaving office. This decision is expected to have implications for ongoing discussions about the use of martial law and the legal responsibilities of government officials during times of national crisis.
