Seoul: A consultative body comprising the ruling People Power Party (PPP), the government, and doctors' groups convened their second meeting on Sunday, aiming to address the ongoing walkout by trainee doctors. However, the discussions failed to bring the parties closer to a resolution. According to Yonhap News Agency, thousands of trainee doctors have been on a mass resignation strike since February, protesting against the government's decision to substantially increase the medical school quota. This strike has led to significant disruptions in the national healthcare service. In a press briefing held at the National Assembly, PPP spokesperson Han Zeea stated that the government and the medical community remain deadlocked over the admission quotas for the upcoming year and 2026. The medical community is demanding a complete revision of the proposed increase in the medical school quota, while the government has only agreed to reconsider the quota hike for 2026 and beyond, refusing to adjust the 2025 quota. The consultative body, which excludes opposition parties, was established last week. It includes participation from a group of medical school deans and representatives of medical researchers. However, the group representing junior doctors and the Korea Medical Association, the largest doctors' group in South Korea, have opted to boycott the initiative.
