Colony Unleashes Innovative Zombie Horror in Seoul’s High-Rise

Seoul: Director Yeon Sang-ho's latest film "Colony" delivers a new take on the zombie genre, offering an action-packed spectacle set in a high-rise building in downtown Seoul. A biotech conference becomes ground zero for chaos when researcher Seo Young-cheol, portrayed by Koo Kyo-hwan, releases a virus that evolves humans into a new breed of zombies with collective intelligence.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the film follows a classic survival plot as a diverse group of survivors, including biotechnology academics, a police officer, and a pair of siblings, are trapped inside the building. They must navigate the threat posed by zombies that transform from primitive creatures to a more powerful, interconnected species. The mastermind behind this mutation, Seo, envisions a future where such connections enhance communication and control among humans.

As the narrative unfolds, biotechnology professor Kwon Se-jeong, played by Jun Ji-hyun, emerges as the group's leader, devising strategies to outsmart the zombies. Despite the survivors' efforts, bureaucratic hurdles and incompetent authorities exacerbate their dire situation.

Yeon Sang-ho emphasizes that the zombies are the central figures in this cinematic experience. The film features meticulously choreographed performances by modern dance groups, creating visually captivating scenes reminiscent of an ant mill's deadly spiral.

While "Colony" showcases a star-studded cast known for strong performances, the film leaves limited room for character development. Bonds such as the one between siblings Hyun-hee and Hyun-seok add emotional layers, but the film could benefit from deeper exploration of character backstories and motivations.

Despite these narrative constraints, actor Ji Chang-wook delivers noteworthy combat scenes that resonate emotionally. "Colony" made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival's Midnight Screenings and has now hit local theaters, marking another milestone for Yeon Sang-ho's filmography.
