CIO Requests Indictment of President Yoon Over Failed Martial Law Bid

Seoul: The state anti-corruption agency has officially requested the prosecution to indict President Yoon Suk Yeol concerning his unsuccessful attempt to declare martial law. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has made this request, seeking charges against the president for leading an insurrection and abusing his power.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the CIO has transferred the case to the prosecution since it does not possess the authority to indict a sitting president. The charges against Yoon include collusion with then Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and others to incite a riot by declaring martial law on December 3. Additionally, Yoon is accused of abusing his power by deploying troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting against the decree.

Yoon is currently detained at the Seoul Detention Center in Uiwang, located south of the capital. Concurrently, a trial in the Constitutional Court is underway to decide on the validity of Yoon's impeachment by the National Assembly. Should the court uphold the impeachment, Yoon will be removed from office, prompting a snap presidential election within 60 days. Conversely, if the impeachment is dismissed, Yoon will be reinstated as president.
