Seoul: Acting President Choi Sang-mok announced that South Korea is open to dialogue with North Korea but emphasized a firm response to any provocations stemming from Pyongyang, citing the country's strong alliance with the United States. This statement was made during a 2025 policy direction meeting focused on diplomacy and security, attended by officials from the National Security Office and various ministries.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting took place following North Korea's recent missile activities, including the launch of a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile on January 6 and several short-range ballistic missiles shortly after. Choi highlighted the government's strategy to actively manage tensions, particularly in border regions, to prevent escalation while remaining open to inter-Korean dialogue.
Choi reiterated the importance of a strong defense posture and the South Korea-U.S. alliance in responding to North Korean provocations. He assured that the government would prioritize the protection of its citizens and deter further provocations with decisive measures.
Addressing domestic political challenges, Choi stressed the necessity for robust and effective diplomacy and security strategies, which he described as essential for national survival. He urged ministers, vice ministers, and public officials to dedicate themselves to ensuring seamless operations in diplomacy and security under challenging domestic and international conditions, aiming for the stable administration of state affairs.
